Let's look at some of the basic concepts of Jiu Jitsu, it's origins, history and adaptations that have become an integral part to today's Mixed Martial Arts fighting style. In all reality, without Jiu Jitsu it would be foolish to even think about climbing into the octagon, taking on one of the big MMA fighters.
As expected, it all started in Asia, or more specifically, in Japan prior to the 17th century.
Jujutsu - literally meaning the "art of softness," or "way of yielding" is a collective name for Japanese martial art styles including unarmed and armed technique. It was originally developed by the fabled Samurai and was widely known as a style for grappling related fighting styles.
Catchy terms like "Art of Harmony", "Catching Hand", "The way of Softness", soon found an applicable home as descriptive styles of this unarmed self defense discipline.
Within centuries of development, several forms and versions of Jiu Jitsu were created, one of the more viciously effective ones: "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu".
With the birth of MMA Fighting, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has often been named as the primary fighting style one must master to even stand a remote chance of competing in the octagon. In 1916 a Brazilian business man, Gustao Gracie introduced his sons Carlos and Helio Gracie to this competitive art of Jiu Jitsu. The sons took the ancient fighting style to new levels and subsquently coined the term "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu". It's often claimed that the Gracies were truly the founders of MMA fighting contests, including the famed UFC - Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Staking their own claim to fame, the UFC has massively helped in making Competitive Jiu Jitsu (CJJ) a mainstream sport that many young men and woman follow. Discipline, iron will and sacrifices are expected.
